On April 5, 2022, Shaws Maple Syrup received the 2022 Heritage Business Award from the Simcoe County Historical Association. The Heritage Business Award recognizes businesses that have influenced the development of Simcoe County through generations of entrepreneurial innovation and excellence, so this is a particularly special award for us. We were honoured to be recognized and to celebrate our family’s long history as a maple syrup producer in Oro-Medonte.
“When we can locate a business that has been running nearly 120 years in the same family, five generations of them mind you, but in the same family, then its a wonderful tribute we can pay to this family and this business that has stayed viable for so long“. Donna Wise of the Simcoe County Historical Association.
A Proud Family History
We are very proud of our history and the hard work, innovations and knowledge that have passed down through five generations and into the sixth. It is a rare event at any time to have three generations of family working together, side-by-side, doing something they all enjoy. Since we started making maple syrup in 1904, we have had three generations working together over four different periods. Grandmothers and grandsons, extended family and friends, with everyone chipping in to make our business a success. As you can imagine, there are many happy memories and a ton of great stories.
While each generation has made their own unique mark on our business, a consistent love of nature has made our time in the sugar bush rewarding. We have all enjoyed making maple syrup as much as we enjoy sharing the sugar bush experience with our guests.
“Being recognized as part of Simcoe County’s heritage is a great honour for the Shaw family,” said Tom Shaw. “We are committed to maintaining the standards set for us long ago. We enjoy sharing our family story and strive to create a memorable, enjoyable and quality experience for young and old alike.”
