One of the best parts of being a caterer is visiting new places and it we felt like we found a hidden gem when we catered this wedding at Saulaine over the past weekend. Saulaine means “sunny” in Latvian and it is the name of the facility that has been St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Latvian Church of Toronto’s Christian Retreat Centre since 1952. Just 20 minutes south of Barrie, the expansive property serves as a camp, an event centre and a retreat.
The description on the Saulaine website captures the property perfectly:
Saulaine is a wide, wandering property of fields, forest and clay cliffs nestled on the Nottawasaga River. There are flower meadow trails down to the river, and walking paths through the fern and cedar forests. A simple road leads down to the riverside camping area that is an restorative place to stay for couples, families and groups. You can also stay in our variety of cozy rooms across from the Sun Barn, swim in the river, host a late night campfire or celebrate a wedding.
Our team from Shaws Catering was delighted to be asked to cater this lovely August wedding. Wedding guests enjoyed a fully catered bbq buffet of slow roasted pig, caprese salad, Caesar salad, baby potatoes, vegetarian pasta and fresh corn on the cob. Our team was able to enjoy a quick tour of the property before the ceremony. Thanks to Oria for being so generous with her time and showing us around! We were blow away by this hidden gem of a property. We can’t wait to see the pictures Hanna from Rosewood Studios took!
